OAU New VC: All You Need To Know About Obafemi Awolowo University Vice Chancellor Appointment Protest

The appointment of a new Vice Chancellor at Obafemi Awolowo University [OAU] has sparked protests against the school. 

Due to the OAU Ile Ife protest, governors in both Osun and Ondo states have expressed concern.

A viral social media video showed some people protesting against the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bamire Adebayo Simeon.

The video showed protesters outside the University of Maryland campus with two masquerades who carried “sacrifice” in front of the university senate building.

According to reports, the protesters are Osun worshipers, and they claim that the new Vice Chancellor of the OAU will not be an Ife native.

According to the university website, Prof. Simeon is a native of Oyan, in Odo-Otin Local Government Area of Osun State.

Management of the university in a statement, told the leadership of Ile-Ife town to call the protesters to order.

According to the school administration, the advice is critical in order to preserve the cordial relationship that exists between the university and the Ile-Ife communities.

“Determined to forcefully install an Ile Ife indigene as the next Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, some indigenes of Ile Ife invaded the campus of the university with charms and fetish objects.

They closes the school’s two major gates, thereby preventing staff, students, and other stakeholders from either coming in or leaving the university.”

The Institution said the protest by indigenes started last Thursday, March 17, 2022, just after the University Governing Council announced Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire as the 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor.

Then, on Monday, March 21, 2022, the protest reached another level.

on March 21, 2022, things became worse as indigenes beat up some OAU students as they met at the gate, blocking the two major gates as early as 6:00 a.m.

“They came to campus with charms and other fetish items. In all-white spiritual traditional attire, chanting incantations and performing rituals.”

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University explained that them following due processes and merit is the basis for the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor.
