Abuja’s Biggest Supermarket ‘Next Cash and Carry’ Burnt To Ashes

A fire has burnt down Next Cash and Carry, which is one of the biggest shopping malls in Abuja.

The fire started yesterday morning in shopping complex, Next Cash and Carry.

Idris Abass, Director General of the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), said they are still investigating the cause of the fire as no one knows what caused it.

“When we got the distress call, we activated all the responders. To make sure that they came early, we first arrived with other security agencies to coordinate the place to prevent looting Next Cash and Carry.”

“The Police, Civil Defence, and all other security agencies, including the DSS, arrived before other responders arrived around 9 a.m. and we coordinated the scene. We did not allow anyone to enter,” the Director General said.

The authorities said they do not know exactly how the fire started, but some eyewitnesses said that the fire started in the early morning between 6 and 7 a.m., adding that there was a spark from the first floor.

“This early morning, we came here and saw the fire. Some of the cleaners were still present as they prepared the place to open for the day.”

“When some of the cleaners tried to rescue some things, but before we knew fire was everywhere, we called the fire service, and they came after two hours. When they came, the water was not much to quench the fire” he added.
