Two Young Nigerians Who Declared Their Intention To Run For President Speak On The Law Against Their Participation In The Presidential Elections

Chukwuka Monye and Khadijah Okunnu-Lamidi recently declared their intention to contest Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election.

The two Nigerians’ latest declaration signaled the possibility that more young people would take a serious interest in the next general election.

Shortly before the 2019 Nigeria presidential election, his civil society organizations began launching campaigns urging him not to be too young to run for president.

It was also in May 2018 that President Muhammadu Buhari signed the “not too young to run” as a law which reduced the age of running for elective positions.

In this law, they reduced the age to run for the Nigerian President’s office from 30 to 40 years old and allowed independent candidature in Nigeria.

So, what 42-year-old Monye and 38-year-old Okunnu-Lamidi did has piqued the public’s interest in determining who will succeed Buhari in 2023.

He declared his intention on the 15th of January, promising to close the gap between generations, public and private sectors.

He also promised Nigerians that he would close the gap between the north and the south and between Nigeria and the international community”.

Chukwuka Monye said he is in a unique position because of his age and experience to serve as the bridge builder.

Khadijah Okunnu-Lamidi is the first woman to declare her intention to be president by 2023.

She said she would rekindle hope and make Nigeria work for Nigerians if she took over the position.

Although Chukwuka Monye and Mrs. Okunnu-Lamidi declared their intention to run for president, they are yet to reveal what party they would contest under.
