Popular Football Star, Gints Freimanis, Is Dead

Gints Freimanis, a former Latvian defender, died at the age of 38 after a long fight with cancer.

On Tuesday, Latvia’s national football organization (LFF) acknowledged his death, saying, ‘Gints Freimanis will always be remembered by fans as a fierce fighter on the pitch who was ready to do anything for his team.’

‘At this difficult time, the Latvian Football Federation extends its heartfelt sympathies to Gint’s family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and the entire Latvian football community.’

In October 2021, the former right-back was diagnosed with stage four skin cancer and underwent groin surgery.

However, physicians informed him in January that the cancer had gone to his brain.

Freimanis was still playing professional football at the time of his retirement.

He stated:

“Unfortunately, during routine examinations on January 17, metastases in my head were discovered.

“I need your help to continue the treatment. May God have mercy!”

Freimanis has spent practically his entire career in Latvia, most recently at Saldus. In 2009, he made one appearance for Irish club St Pat’s and also spent time in Germany.

He also played 13 times for Latvia, scoring one goal.
