Apongbon Bridge: Fire Outbreak Burn Apongbon Market, Damages Lagos Eko bridge Today

Today, a fire destroyed a market in Apongbon, which is part of the Eko Bridge in Lagos, causing widespread panic in the city.

The fire outbreak affected many road users and motorists in Lagos.

Many shops which are mostly built with planks were destroyed in the underbridge fire.

According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the fire was reported early in the morning on Today, March 23, 2022, around 03:14am.

The fire started under the Eko bridge in Apongbon, where traders kept their goods.

Lots of shops that sell baking materials were affected.

According to the rescue service, in the morning, they were battling a fire outbreak at Eko bridge, Apongbon, Lagos island.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but there have been no reports of injuries or deaths, according to authorities.

And firefighting operations in the scene were still ongoing at the time of the morning.

The intensity of the fire damaged the Eko Bridge, which caused disturbances in the movement along that area.

On the Eko and Carter Bridge, there is heavy traffic.

Apongbon fire: NEMA announces alternative routes for Lagos motorists

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority [LATSMA] said the fire outbreak caused slow movement of motorists.

LATSMA also advised road users to use alternative routes.

The traffic agency also shared video of the early morning fire that burned down shops and properties.

“Motorists who are not yet at Eko Bridge are advised to use alternative routes like the Third-Mainland Bridge and Carter Bridge.

Emergency Response Agencies such as the Fire Service, LASEMA, and LASTMA are on the scene.” They said in one of their tweets

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Works closed the bridge for integrity tests to determine the safety of the bridge for further usage.

Eko bridge is one of three bridges that connects Lagos Island to the mainland, mostly for commercial activities.

The bridge is important to traders as it connects the major Lagos markets to the rest of the city.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is asking people also advise road users to use alternative routes.

It was also reported that the Jaguda people are looting in Apongbon Market.
