“Stop Buying Herbal Concoctions From Hawkers” – NAFDAC Warns.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians against buying herbal concoctions from hawkers because the concoctions lack storage standards.

The Director-General of the agency, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, was the one who gave the warning during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) today in Lagos.

The Director General said that any herbal medicine or concoction hawked on buses or on the streets should be avoided as there are uncertainties about their sources.

In the liquid concoctions, especially after four or five days, bacteria starts to grow.

“Even if the concoctions has some medicinal properties, the bacteria will kill the person first who is taking it” she said.

However, the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, said some of the herbal medicines and concoctions work, but Nigerians who take them must ensure that the herbal drugs and concoctions have passed NAFDAC’s safety and efficacy tests.

Many of our herbal medicines work, but we have to do a lot of research to show how they work and at what level we are supposed to be taking them so that they will not get to the toxicity level.

The Director General also cautioned the public against the use of performance-enhancing drugs because of the danger it poses to many men, as he revealed that it sometimes causes heart problems and could even kill.

He went on to say that the agency will continue to use a multifaceted approach and strengthen pharmaceutical industries to protect citizens from fake, contaminated, or dangerous drugs, as well as contaminated or substandard contaminated foods.
