In Port Harcourt, Rivers state Nigeria, The high court has sentence a ex-policeman to death by hanging for killing a bus driver because of N100 for 2015.

As she delivered the judgement, the evidence before the court showed that ex-sergeant James Imhalu intentionally fired a bullet at a commercial driver, David Legbara, and killed him.

The Judge described ex-sergeant James Imhalu as a “serial, trigger-happy policeman who is not allowed him to remain in society.”

She said the court found the former policeman guilty as they looked at his extra-judicial and confessional statements as well as the evidence his prosecution team and their witnesses provided.

The prosecution lawyer, Kingsley Briggs, praised the judgement and says it does give little comfort to the family of the driver who lost theur bread winner.

“We thank God that justice is on the side of the family today.Although the wheel of justice continues to grind slowly, surely justice will come. It is unfortunate that the family lost theur father and bread winner, but this judgement today would give them some solace.”

A representative of the Legal Aid Council in Rivers State, defended the former policeman, ex-sergeant James Imhalu, and said they should study the judgment to determine the next course of action.

In August 2015, an incident happened in the Wimpy area of Rumuepirikom in Obio Akpor, a local government area.

Sergeant James Imhalu was on stop-and-search duty from Kala Police Station, Rumueprikom, when he shot and killed bus driver David Legbara over a N100 bribe at Wimpy Junction, along the ever-busy Ikwerre Road.

The late Legbara is an Ogoni man from Uegewe-Boue in Rivers state’s Tai LGA, and the only son and bread winner in his family, and his wife was eight months pregnant.

The killing sparked serious protests from commercial drivers and conductors for several days, which seriously affected traffic and transportation, especially from The Mile three to Rumuokoro axis, because police were using tear gas to pursue the protesters, they intended to stage a naked protest around Port Harcourt before Governor Nyesom Wike arrived to ask them to calm down.

The Governor had addressed the angry crowd at the Ikwerre/Wimpy road junction, where the incident occurred, and promised that those responsible for their colleague’s death wouldface the law, adding, ” The Commissioner of Police must explain to me why one of his men went to kill an innocent person, Please calm down, ” He said.
