On Tuesday, the twin sister of the late Nigerian gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, testified during the trial of her sister’s husband.
“It was because of her husband’s beating that she died and not an ulcer or cancer,” Amarachi Eze, twin sister of Osinachi Nwachukwu, told the Abuja High Court.
Osinachi’s husband, Peter Nwachukwu, faces 23 count charges of culpable homicide, which led to the singer’s death.
In May of this year, the Nigerian government arraigned him in a high-profile case involving domestic violence and homicide.
He pleaded not guilty to culpable homicide in his wife’s death when the case first came up in court.
However, the judge requested that he be held in Kuje prison until the homicide case against him is heard.
The Nigerian gospel singer died on April 20, 2022, sparking outrage across Nigeria after her family alleged she suffered domestic abuse at her husband’s hand.
The third witness in the prosecution for the alleged culpable homicide case against him is Osinachi’s sister, who is also a gospel singer.
She explained to the court that when she was in the hospital with her sister, Peter entered their hospital room and told them that test results showed that she did not have cancer.
“And my sister started to rejoice.” Her sister told the court.
She said she agreed to go to court to seek justice for her sister because of the way her husband beat her and starved her like an animal.
“Osinachi complained to me, saying she had no idea why her husband beats her the way he does.”
“And that any time he wanted to beat her, you would hit and kick her in the chest.”
She narrated how he beat Osinachi when she carried her first pregnancy. She later fell sick and they drove her to the hospital around 2 am that day.
When Osinachi was pregnant, he refused to give her food, and it was only bread she ate.
“She later called me saying the beating was too much and that he beat her with a mopping stick and hit her chest and that one day he would kill her,” she told the court.
Amarachi also narrated her last moments with her sister at the hospital as she burst into tears.
She testified that Osinachi called her, said her chest was hurting her and asked her to come visit her in the hospital.
So, on the 23rd of March, 2022, she left Enugu for Abuja to stay with her sister at National Hospital while she collected treatment.
She said Osinachi’s husband saw her in the hospital and asked her what she did for him, and later asked her to leave the hospital, saying she had a guest.
Her sister said Osinachi left the hospital and stood outside until the guest arrived in the evening.
She said the other day, around 11 p.m., Osinachi’s husband asked her to leave the hospital, and when Osinachi tried to intervene, he shouted at her aggressively.
That night, Osinachi’s twin later left the hospital. She said the following morning, when she came back to the hospital, Osinchi begged her to go see her children.
Her sister did not agree at first but later decided to go after the late singer started crying.
Her sister asked her husband for permission to see her child, but he refused.
And when she arrived at the hospital, her sister calmed Osinachi down, saying her husband refused to give permission, and because of this situation, Amarachi went back to the village.
“Because of the text message I sent to her husband to tell him to stop treating her badly, Osinachi later called me and said I should never send him a message or call her again.”
After that day, her mind was no longer at peace.
Days after, Some friends of hers called to inform her of her sister’s death.
