Oscars Academy Awards Ban Will Smith For 10 Years Over Slap

Will Smith was banned from the Oscars gala and other Academy events for 10 years.

The expulsion of the American actor comes after he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, which organizes the Oscars awards ceremony, met virtually on Friday to discuss disciplinary action.

Smith apologised for his actions on March 28th, 2022 and resigned from the Academy days after.

The actor hit Chris Rock for joking about his wife’s shaved head, which was as a result of a hair-loss condition called alopecia.

Less than an hour later, the award was given to the best actor for his role in “King Richard”, who is the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

In a statement, the Academy said the 94th Oscars were overshadowed by the unacceptable and harmful behaviour that they saw Smith’s exhibit on stage.

According to the organization, they did not adequately address the situation in the room at the time the slap occurred.

The Academy also thanked Chris Rock for maintaining his composure under extraordinary circumstances.

They claimed that the ban was imposed to protect performers and guests and to restore trust in the Academy.

In his resignation statement, Will Smith said he had betrayed the trust of the Academy and was heartbroken over his actions.

Smith added that he would fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct.

The actor’s resignation means that he would be able to vote for future Oscar voters.

The Academy’s disciplinary hearing into the incident was originally scheduled for April 18, but it was accelerated after Will Smith resigned.
