National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives has again called on Dapo Abiodun, the Ogun State governor to as a matter of urgency address the acute shortage of nurses and midwives in the state’s public health facilities.
According to the chairman of the association in Ogun state, only 215 nurses and midwives are currently working in the 448 public hospitals across the state.
Mrs. Roseline Solarin, called on the Ogun State government while addressing at a town hall meeting organized by the Community Development Association in conjunction with Ogun State Women on Maternal Health and Frontliner Workers in Abeokuta.
She advocated for automatic jobs for graduates of the college of nursing and midwives in Abeokuta and Ijebu Ode.
She also called for the introduction of a midwives service scheme with better incentives to encourage volunteer midwives in the state.
She further suggests that the Ogun state government should encourage sponsorship of people by communities for midwifery training, with a bond for the graduates of the scheme to work in their communities for two years.
According to her, the proposals will help to solve the acute shortage of nurses and midwives in public hospitals in the state.
She added that this acute shortage in the state health facilities is responsible for the increase in maternal death in the state.
It should be recalled that the state has been paying lip service to the recruitment of workers to a different sector of the state ministry, departments, and agency since the administration station assumed office on May 29, 2019.
