JUST IN: ASUU Extends Strike By Eight Weeks, Give Reasons

University lecturers (ASUU) in Nigeria want to extend the ongoing strike by eight weeks

According to an Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) official, they are extending the strike because the government has yet to agree to their demands.

This announcement comes as the one-month warning strike expires on Monday, March 14, 2022.

Prof. Abdulkadir Muhammad Danbazau said the decision to extend the strike is to allow the union and the government to reach an agreement in order to avoid any further strikes in the future.

Asuu wants the government to quickly approve their payment system, called University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS), to pay them salary instead of the government’s IPPIS.

Since the strike, the university lecturers association and government delegations have met twice with the Ministry of Labour and Productivity to iron out the issues and find a solution.

On the 2009 agreement, the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, set up a committee to renegotiate the 2009 agreement between the federal government and ASUU.

Why we extended strike by eight weeks – ASUU

The committee is expected to turn in the report in six weeks from the time of its inauguration.

They also looked at the payment system review.

The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, told reporters that UTAS failed the integrity test and that they were waiting for the association to upgrade the payment system and send it back to them

According to Inuwa, the association has never returned the upgraded version to the department to consider and certify that it is acceptable.

The minister of labor and productivity says they have no problem with earned allowance and that all that remains is to reconcile the payments which they make to the university system in batches; after that, the minister of finance looks for the remaining money to pay, despite the fact that the federal government has none.
