Egyptian Judge Sentenced To Death For Killing His Journalist Wife

Ayman Hajjaj, an Egyptian judge, was sentenced to death for killing his wife, Shaimaa Gamal, a popular journalist and TV presenter.

According to Middle East Eye, an Egyptian court issued the verdict on Tuesday, August 16, in one of the country’s most high-profile murder cases in recent months.

Last month, the public prosecutor’s office announced that Hajjaj and his accomplice, businessman Hussein al-Gharabli, had been charged with “premeditated murder” of his wife.

According to EgyptWatch, Hajjaj reported his wife missing on October 16 and claimed she vanished from a shopping mall.

A few days later, al-Gharabli went to the Public Prosecution, claiming a close relationship with the judge, and revealed that the judge was involved in his wife’s murder, confirming he witnessed the murder and knew where her body was buried.

Following the al-Gharabli account, the Public Prosecution obtained permission from the State Council to act against Hajjaj and began the investigation to find the wife’s body. Hajjaj vanished, but the police were able to apprehend him.

Gamal’s body was discovered in June in a remote villa, nearly three weeks after her husband reported her missing.

The next court hearing, when the Grand Mufti’s approval is expected, is scheduled for September 11.
