According to The Nation, the federal government has stated that the flood disaster that has resulted in the loss of lives and livelihoods can only be mitigated with consistent investments over a 30-year period
Speaking after a meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday, October 26, Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, who revealed that he made a presentation to the Council jointly with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management, and Social Development, stated that despite the early warning system in place, a lot of capital-intensive initiatives still need to be done in the future to avert the co-ordination.
The Minister, who stated that natural disaster’s prevention investments are not feasible under a single administration, also stated that floods cannot be prevented but can only be minimized by the government.

He also revealed that the current administration is already working on a master plan for flood management that will take at least three years to complete.
The Minister, who claimed that many flood victims ignored evacuation warnings, also blamed tree felling and degraded soil for the country’s massive flood impact this year.
