An army helicopter that was transporting India’s top military commander and his family, crashed in Tamil Nadu.

India’s Chief of Defence Staff, Bipin Rawat, and 14 other people were travelling in a Mi-17V5 helicopter which crashed near Coonoor city.

A minister in Tamil Nadu’s government said five people have died and two are injured and are in critical condition.

Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Forest, K Ramachandran, said they have begun a rescue operation, and the injured, some of whom were severely burned, have been taken to the hospital.

The Air Force has also said that they have ordered an investigation into the accident.
