How Gunmen Attacked Oyo State Prison, Releasing Over 800 Prisoners

The Nigerian Federal government has begun looking for over 800 prisoners who escaped from a detention centre called the Medium Security Custodial Centre, in Oyo State.

Their search began after unknown gunmen attacked the detention facility on October 22nd, 2021, on Friday in the Abolongo area of Oyo State.

Reportedly, 837 prisoners escaped from the Custodial Centre.

After the attack, the spokesperson of the correction centre, Anjorin Olanrewaju, released a statement and said that the correction centre had recaptured a total of 262 prisoners.

Local reports have said that the gunmen who attacked the centre were many in number, and they invaded the Medium Security Custodial Centre around 10pm.

The Oyo State Security Authorities are yet to identify the gunmen who carried out the attack, but the Spokesperson of the Correction Centre, Anjorin Olanrewaju, said the gunmen carried highly developed guns to perform their operation.

“The Oyo Medium Security Custodial Centre, in Oyo State experienced an attack by yet to be identified gunmen at about 2130hrs on Friday the 22nd of October, 2021.” The spokesperson said

The gunmen invaded the Centre with heavily armed, sophisticated weapons.

After having a serious gun battle with security officers on guard, the unknown gunmen gained entrance into the yard, using dynamite to blast the walls of the detention centre.
