“He Was On Our Watchlist Before He Was Arrested” – EFCC Talks On Former Anambra Governor Willie Obiano’s Arrest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, arrested the former Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano.

Willie Obiano was arrested the same day, he turned his seat over to Governor Charles Soludo.

Wilson Uwujaren, a spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed that they arrested him and he is in their office in Lagos state.

According to reports, the former governor was on his way to Houston, Texas, in the United States after handing power over to his successor, Governor Charles Soludo.

“He has been on their watchlist for some time but they could not arrest him because of the immunity he has” Wilson Uwujaren explained.

It is unclear why the commission placed him on the watchlist based on the allegations leveled against him.

In the past, many Nigerian ex-governors faced arrest soon after they left office and faced prosecution for corruption-mostly money laundering.

Earlier in the day, the former Governor’s wife was involved in a faceoff with the widow of former Nigerian separatist leader Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Several videos that went viral on social media showed the two women standing toe-to-toe as they exchanged words and showed aggression in the venue where Mr. Obiano was handing over his power to the newly elected governor, Charles Soludo. But it is not still clear what caused the quarrel.
