Court Orders Kano State To Apologise To Sanusi, Pay Him 10 Million Naira Over Banishment
The Federal High Court in Abuja has declared the security operatives’ actions to the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, as unlawful and a violation of fundamental human rights after they dethroned him.
They banished him from Kano state, using force to relocate him to Awe, in Nasarawa state.
Judge to the federal high court, Justice Anwuli Chikere, said the manner in which security operatives used force to remove him from the palace in March 2020, after his dethronement on the order of the Kano State government, to Nasarawa State against his will, is a serious violation of his rights to freedom of movement and personal liberty.
Justice Anwuli Chikere also declared that the Emirate Council Law 2019 under which the Kano State government claimed that they acted did not follow the law, adding that as citizen of Nigeria who has not commit any offence, Sanusi Lamido is entitled to live in any part of the country.
Justice Anwuli Chikere awarded N10 million damages against the Kano State Government, the Department of State Services and the Inspector General of Police and ordered them to Apologize to Sanusi in at least two Nigerian newspapers.
