Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-reigning monarch, dies at the age of 96 in Bamoral, Scotland, after reigning for 70 years.
Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after health concerns arose earlier in the day.
The Queen ascended to the throne in 1952, during a period of enormous social change.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, became the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement, saying “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.
“The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow”, it reads.

All the Queen’s children travelled to Balmoral, which is near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.
Her grandson, Prince William, was also present, with his brother, Prince Harry.
On April 21, 1926, the 96-year-old Commonwealth head was born in Mayfair, London.

She was the Duke and Duchess of York’s first child. In 1936, her father was crowned.
