Boko Haram Stole 82 Million Naira, $36,000 Cash Belonging To Inmates — Kuje Prison Workers
Inmates at the Kuje Prison in Abuja are threatening a deadly riot after officials claimed that a large sum of money kept for the prisoners was carted away by Boko Haram insurgents who breached the facility on Tuesday night.
According to the report, money was kept with at least five prison officials, including those in charge of the commissary, for several months.
“One prison guard told 13 inmates this afternoon that all the money they kept with him had been stolen. He bluntly told them that the N26 million is no longer in his possession.”
At around 10:00 p.m., suspected Boko Haram insurgents broke into Kuje Prison, which is located about 43 kilometers southwest of downtown Abuja. According to defence minister Bashir Magashi, while some detainees refused to take advantage of the Kuje Prison jailbreak, all Kuje Prisoners affiliated with Boko Haram escaped.

President Muhammadu Buhari stopped by the facility on his way to the airport on his way to Senegal on Wednesday afternoon, inspecting the damage and assuring correctional managers of his support.
As the president left the scene, prisoners began shouting that they had lost money during the raid, and some threatened violence if officials did not return their money, according to the report.
“Yes, that is the problem we’re confronting now. Some people lost money in naira while some lost in dollars,” an official said when asked for corroboration by Peoples Gazette on Wednesday evening. The official said the money belong to wealthy individuals inside the prison.
“It’s those big men that are more enraged because they kept millions with the warders. About N82 million was declared missing and four people are looking for $36,000. We don’t know what the prison management will do about the matter because the money was not kept with the warders officially,” A source said
