Attackers Set INEC Office On Fire In Enugu State

Nigeria election agency, Inec, have confirmed attack on their office in Enugu state, in the Southeast region.

Festus Okoye, Inec’s National commissioner said attackers burned down their office in Igboeze North LGA on Sunday midnight.

Independent National Electoral Commission said the people who set the place on fire overpowered security.

Festus Okoye Esq, INEC’s National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education Committee, confirmed this development in a brief statement on Monday.

Mr. Okoye revealed that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Enugu State, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu, had reported that INEC’s Igboeze North Local Government Area office had been burnt.

According to the REC, the attack occurred at approximately 11.48 p.m. on July 3, 2022. The arsonists are said to have beaten the security guards, forced their way into the building, and set the INEC office on fire ablaze.

Despite the best efforts of the Enugu Fire Service deployed. 748 ballot boxes, 240 voting cubicles, office furniture, and equipment were destroyed.

The Commission is working to determine the status of voter registration machines for the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, as well as uncollected Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) locked up in the fireproof cabinet, according to Mr Okoye’s communique.

He went on to say that the incident had been reported to the Nigeria Police for further investigation and action.
