There were rumors that a lawmaker in Adamawa state, Ibrahim Italia, shared 1000 naira as a scholarship with some students of the Federal College of Education, Yola.
Some Nigerians on social media condemned his actions, saying that the money was too small to be shared as a scholarship to students, especially at this time when the country’s economy is under inflation.
Awwal Garba, Ibrahim Italia’s legislative aide, stated that the rumors and reports that the lawmaker gave 1000 naira to students as a scholarship are a big lie because it was only to assist and settle damages fees.
Photos which went viral showed the aide of the lawmaker sharing 1000 naira with the students of the college who left from his constituency.
But the aide has explained what really happened.
“Students’ unrest happened in the school last month, so the school decided that each student must pay 1500 naira each for damages. The honourable Ibrahim Italiya heard the cries of students in his constituency and that’s why he decided to pay 70% of the charges for them, which is 1000 naira. Legislative aide to Ibrahim Italia” Awwal Garba said.
“So, contrary to popular belief, the $1,000 is not for scholarships. It was just for assistance to pay the money that the college imposed on the student for some damage that happened after the students protested.” He added.
“The lawmaker is not happy with the fake news that is going about him because it is a positive thing he did. He is not happy with the lies at all. In fact, the students had told him that even if it was 500 naira, he should give them, but he decided to give them 1000 naira to over 100 students. ” He revealed
