4,885 Households Destroyed By Flood In Ogun State– NEMA

According to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), floods have destroyed 4,885 homes in Ogun State this year.

NEMA’s Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed, stated this in Abeokuta on Wednesday while presenting relief materials to the Ogun State government for distribution to flood victims throughout the state.

Ahmed, who was represented by the Director of Special Duties, Dr Bandele Onimode, claimed that the incident had claimed lives, displaced people, caused loss of means of livelihood, and caused socio-economic dislocation.

According to the NEMA chief, the flooding destroyed several houses in Ogun and submerged hectares of cultivated farmlands.

According to him, the global economic downturn and pre-harvest food shortages had increased the vulnerability of those affected by the flood.

The NEMA South West Zonal office, in collaboration with relevant State government agencies, conducted damage/loss assessments to guide relief interventions to people in need in Ogun.

“The result of the assessment indicated that 4,885 households were affected by the flood,” the NEMA DG said.

President Muhammadu Buhari, he said, had approved the release of 12,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains from the National Strategic Reserve for distribution to flood-affected states.

1,000 bags of rice, beans, salt, maize, tomato paste, vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, nylon mats, mosquito nets, soap, garri, guinea brocade, adult and children’s clothes, and sorghum were among the items donated.
