EFCC Arraigns Man For Spending 20 Million Naira Which Was Mistakenly Sent By His Employer

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken a man who spent 20 million naira that had mistakenly entered his bank account to court.

The Kaduna Zonal command of the EFCC, who arraigned the man for theft before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, said he committed the crime in 2020.

The Kaduna Zonal Command of the EFCC on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, arraigned a serving airman, Lance Corporal Haruna Samuel, of the Nigeria Air Force Base, Kaduna.

The EFCC said in a statement. “We arraigned him before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court sitting in Kaduna on a two-count charge, which is theft and criminal misappropriation.”

The EFCC said that on December 3, 2020, the man received credit alert of the sum of 20,014,300 naira in his bank account, and the money entered his account by mistake from the account of his employer.

Haruna Samuel, who knew fully well that he was not expecting that huge amount of money, later withdrew part of the money for personal use and settled hidden debts instead of reporting the case to the bank or employer.

Haruna Ram was detained by the EFCC after withdrawing the money from his duty post in Plateau State.

Count one of the charges against Haruna, which the defendant read, says:

“That you, Haruna Samuel, sometime in December 2020 in Kaduna within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, dishonestly misappropriate the sum of 20,014,300.00 naira (Twenty Million and Fourteen Thousand, Three Hundred Naira), property of the NAF Ground Training Centre, which they mistakenly sent to your bank account.”

“This money you dishonestly converted it to your own use and you thereby committed an offence which is contrary to Section 293 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017 and punishable under Section 294 of the same Law”.

Haruna Samuel pleaded not guilty to the charges when they read them to him.

Because of Haruna’s plea, the prosecution counsel, Precious C. Onyeneho, told the court to fix a date for the trial of this case to begin.

Haruna’s counsel, S.A. Yahaya, moved for an oral application for bail and said the court should agree to bail his client.

Justice Khobo granted bail to the defendant in the sum of 5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) and a reliable surety in like sum.

The Court adjourned the case till March 10, 2022, for hearing.
