Why President Buhari Traveled With His Wife And Nigerian Ministers To Turkey

President Buhari is travelling to Istanbul, Turkey on December 16, 2021.

Garba Shehu, spokesperson of the president, released a statement saying that the President will travel with his wife, Aisha Buhari, and some government officials to Turkey.

Their visit today comes weeks after the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, visited the President.

During his visit, Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to expand trade between the two countries to 5 billion dollars.

Garba Shehu said that the President will go on the trip to attend the third Turkey-Africa Partnership summit.

The theme of the summit is “Enhanced Partnership in Common Development and Prosperity”. The agenda includes a review of the cooperation between African countries and Turkey since the last summit in 2014.

During President Erdogan’s last visit, the two countries reached an agreement in several sectors, which include the defence industry, energy, mining, and hydrocarbons.

The Nigerian delegation will use this opportunity of the gathering in Istanbul to tighten cooperation with other partners for more investment and trade opportunities in Nigeria.

The people who will be traveling with Buhari on the trip are the Minister of Defence, Maj-Gen. Bashir Magashi (Rtd); Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; Minister of FCT, Mohammed Bello; Minister of Agriculture, Mohammed Abubakar; Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire; and Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo.

Others are the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, and the National Security Adviser, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (Rtd).

The spokesperson also added that the President will be returning to Abuja on the 19th of December, 2021.
